Syracuse men’s track and field garners 1st-ever national ranking

The Syracuse men’s track and field team has cracked the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association top-20 rankings for the first time in program history.

The Orange is currently ranked No. 19, according to the poll released Monday night.

Despite competing without any throwers, Syracuse has relied on a strong core of distance runners led by senior Martin Hehir and freshman Justyn Knight.

Both Hehir and Knight have gathered Top-10 times nationally in multiple events and each have broken school records.

Hehir broke the Syracuse 10,000-meter record that had stood for 33 years on April 3 at the Stanford Invitational, while Knight shattered the school’s 1,500-meter record set in 1972 at the Virginia Challenge.

Led by Donald Pollitt, Syracuse has also seen strong performances from its sprinters this season. Pollitt finished first in the 110-meter hurdles this past weekend at the Cornell Outdoor Invitational.

The Orange will look to continue its momentum heading into the Duke Twilight meet, the final regular season meet before the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships begin on May 14.
